"I have never heard of this author before and this is NOT some BS review.
Being fairly new to the DSLR scene I want to learn as much as I can about my camera (Cannon Rebel T3 1100D). Almost every book I have about digital photography seems to assume that I have a "CLUE" to begin with. I just finished this book and I found it VERY informative, concise and to the point. I didn't feel talked down to or insulted by my limited experience. I found the information simple enough to grasp and leaving out all the technical jargon made a HUGE difference.
I will surely recommend this book to anyone who asks what to read to help them improve and understand their camera and abilities. I have ordered ALL of his books and I suspect that each one will offer clear and concise information that I can actually use. If your anything like me perhaps you'll have your camera in your hands while your reading so you can change settings and see the difference by changing just a few parameters as you read this great book. I know my pictures will only improve from reading his EXCELLENT books!

- After using a Nikon film camera for more years than I care to remember, I entered the world of digital photography when I won a raffle for a sweet little Sony “point and shoot†style of camera. It was a nice little camera, but after having total control of aperture, shutter speed and focus on the old Nikon F2 Photomic, the new “does it all for you†Sony just wasn’t my cup of tea. So, I about 4 years ago I purchased another Nikon; a D7100 this time. Whereas this camera isn’t “professional gradeâ€, it was a lot more sophisticated than the Sony, and did allow for a total manual mode.
With that new Nikon, I was able to take some amazing pictures. But as they say “even a blind chicken finds a kernel of corn now and thenâ€, I knew I had a pile of learning to do to be able to take my game to the next level. So, I turned to “book learning†as they say. Among the first books I purchased was Mr. Al Judge’s book, “Mastering Digital Camerasâ€.
The book does contain some good information, and was reasonably inexpensive. Mr. Judge as a nice writing style, coupled with the large print of the book made for easy reading. The book defines many of the terms associate with digital cameras (as well as some the terms associated with cameras in general). It does not cover any of the topics covered to any real detail, so that after reading it, the reader will NOT feel as if they have “Mastered Digital Cameras†by any stretch of the imagination.
As a couple of examples, there is only about a page dedicated to White Balance, and only a couple of paragraphs in which Color Space is covered. He then goes on to recommends using a specific color space without giving any reasons why it should be selected. The book is adequate as an introduction, but who can seriously say they have mastered anything after reading a few paragraphs? (I found it ironic the author devoted nearly 2 pages to large format cameras, which to date are not available in digital formats.)
From the book it is clear Mr. Judge mainly uses Canon Cameras as some of the information he presents about Nikon cameras is wrong. For example, unlike for Canon cameras (at least according to Mr. Judge), just about any Nikon lens designed for their digital SLR camera, can be used on any of the Nikon DSLR cameras. All of the cropped frame lenses work on the full frame cameras, as well as all of the full frame lenses will work on the Nikon cropped frame cameras. There very well could be other errors as well, not being a master (yet), I can't say.
In reality the book is little more than an “Introduction to Digital Camerasâ€, though it does give plenty of space to advertise Mr. Judge’s other books. The book is little more than an “appetizer†to the full meal of what is need to know to consider being a master of digital cameras.
I do not recommend this book.

Happy Shooting! - As a hobby photographer, I have read several books, but never had a descent understanding of ISO, f stops, exposure and ND filters. Feeling overwhelmed, this book, I now have and a descent basic understanding, because he explains it in simple English, and explains how factors interact. I am excited to get out and start shooting. I then moving on other capabilities of the camera. I can't wait to read the rest of this series.
- I have a BFA in Photography, and have been in a darkroom since I was 8 years old, however, I haven't picked up a camera in many years, and certainly don't claim to be knowledgable on digital photography. I replaced my old manual film Pentax K1000 with a Nikon digital camera and had a very hard time trying to convert my knowledge of film into digital photography. This book was very helpful, very clear and concise. The cut away pictures of the camera are very neat, I don't think I had ever seen those before. This book helped convert my knowledge of film into digital and I feel more comfortable using my digital camera. It gives very clear explanations on metering, focusing, and white balance. I think this book would be great for a beginner or even a person with photography experience but not digital cameras. Great book!
- Very useful information for a newbie such as myself. Book was very easy to understand and not overwhelming at all. I wish I would have read this before purchasing my Nixon d3400. I would have either bought a Canon or Nixon 5100 instead, but the bundle I got was too much to pass up (18-55, and 70-300 lenses. ) I'll be reading his book about aperture. Shutter speed, and ISO.
- I want to start this review by giving a sincere thank you to the author, Al Judge. As a former photography student who learned almost nothing over a two year period, I can now say that I fully understand the terminology and possess the technical skill to take better photographs and possibly revisit my dream of becoming a sports photographer. Mastering Digital Cameras reads like a textbook only better. It contains all of the information of the best college level textbooks but is actually easy to understand. The only curriculum this book follows is that of a master photographer like Al Judge. And the best part about it is that you don't need to have any previous photography experience to be able to pick up this book and learn how to choose and use a new camera. If you are a seasoned pro, you can still learn a thing or two from this book, but if you are new to photography you will learn more just by reading this book than anyone can ever teach you in a formal class. For someone like me, the abundant illustrations were very helpful. I learn better by doing and aside from having the author right here with me, the book's illustrations are the next best thing. If you are in doubt about this book, just buy it and give it a read. It is well worth the time if you want to build a solid foundation for your photographic skills.
